There are three types of top-level domains: generic, country code, and a special top-level domain (.arpa) for Internet infrastructure. Generic domains were created for world-wide use by the Internet public, whereas country code domains were created to be used by individual countries as they think necessary. These most often can only be registered by residents of the country concerned, though lately more and more of these country code top-level domains become open for registration by anyone, in the same way as for several of the generic ones.
