LIBERTARIAN CD-ROM PROJECT
SHORTEST LIST OF THOSE WHO SHOWED SOME INTEREST IN THIS OPPORTUNITY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABBREVIATIONS USED:
A = Anarchist L = Libertarian S = Suggestions offered
C = Computer Expert M = Mbs or Kbs offered W= Working towards own CD
F = Floppy Disk Publisher P = Publisher of CD
H = Helped by Publicity R = Reader for such CDs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merely a beginning, but, hopefully, not yet an end to this project, regardless of how slowly this listing has grown so far.
This list does not grow by itself. Send in your hints! Perhaps your web searches are more successful than mine.
Not yet fully miniaturized. Anyhow, that might make it as boring as reading a telephone book!
Help build up this list, preferably by placing it on your website, preferably with a program for self-entries. The faster it grows, the sooner it will make itself as superfluous as is now a list for people interested in using CDs for music, software, games, directories & encyclopedias.
An intermediate-sized list (26pp) , and a longer (33pp) are offered, both with more details on the entries, as well as some other related files, upon request, as e-mail attachments or appendixes, all free of charge:
Two short advertisements, in English and German,
One page article: LibrariesADV&CDs: Are our libraries & websites enough?
An article on the fate of books and manuscripts,
A long and alphabetized compilation of thoughts on this project &
A survey of general CD-ROMs published that are of some interest to libertarians.
Once this list begins to grow explosively then I will begin to believe in the "information explosion". Some books temporarily in print and many news snippets and articles on the Internet are not enough. We need ALL freedom books, cheaply & permanently accessible!
Upon web searches I get too often the reply: "cannot be found!" or unwanted multiple replies and often downloading of more relevant texts from the references found, is simply denied!
JUDGMENT & IMAGINATION: You can't depend on your judgment
when your imagination is out of focus. - Mark Twain.
Knowledge can be enormously costly, and is often scattered in widely uneven fragments,
too small to be individually usable in decision making. The communication and
coordination of these scattered fragments of knowledge is one of the basic problems-
perhaps the basic problem- of any society. - Thomas Sowell.
Many of those, who see the benefits of the Internet - for messages and articles as well as single or a few books - cannot imagine that CD-ROMs are superior for the recording and distribution of whole libraries. At the same time, they are realists - in their awareness that, by themselves, they could not compile a whole library. So they need a further step of the imagination, the one required to achieve this compilation cooperatively, together with other and like-minded people and then they have to imagine how to gather these people together for this job. - J.Z., 18.8.02.

I've written a 750-page reference encyclopedia on technology (which is actually four times the size on my computer disk) so I can see how it should work - but it doesn't unless you've got a large marketing operation behind you. I know that I would like to own a libertarian encyclopaedia of writings. www.libertocracy.com Recently he offered an excellent definition of his framework for liberty: "Libertocracy is a polycentric free enterprise government and socio-economic system whereby sovereign individuals join together by mutual consent in a civilization that respects and defends the freedom, dignity and rights of all people equally. - In Libercratic society people live by the rule of sovereign individual freedom, where a person is free to do anything that one chooses as long as it's not imposed on others and doesn't infringe upon the equal right of other individuals to the same freedom. - Libertocracy includes all other forms of government (or non-government anarchy) that respects individual freedom in an environment where people must govern themselves through consensual contracts."
FLEMING, KURT, has ca. 36 MBs to offer on Stirner. kfleming@t-online.de www.p-beier.de/Stirner/ He runs one of the largest, if not the largest archive on Stirner and his kind of individualism. Would it not be wonderful to be able to get all this, cheap and easily, on a CD-ROM? (A) (M)

HUMPHREYS, JOHN, ALS, AUSTRALIAN LIBERTARIAN SOCIETY, has a slightly different or more embracing plan which I fully agree with. He wants to offer a "libertarian library", as one of the outputs of ALS, "a resource that allows access to the most complete range of libertarian works. For the beginnings of this Libertarian Library see its draft: www.geocities.com/libertarian_library/ His e-mail: libertarian_aust@yahoo.com & als@liberty.every1.net ALS website: www.geocities.com/libertarian_society - Alas, due to other commitments he has not yet got around to develop this new website.

He is collaborating with UWE TIMM. (A) (W)
KOMAN, VICTOR, the libertarian science fiction writer. He was previously involved with SOFTSERV SF publishing on floppy disks and may now be involved with J. Neil Schulman' Pulpless.com publishing online, which makes some new libertarian SF available online for a very moderate charge. I believe that once the CD-ROM project gets going, he would become involved in it as well. Vkoman@aol.com (L)
KOSANKE, JOHN, johnfkosanke@yahoo.com (L) (S) (M) - I am in the process of updating my 1991 booklet, "anarcho-capitalism: principles of civilization" as an e-book. Perhaps some sort of publicity exchange can be worked out. My anarcho-capitalist freenation project, "Las Portadas" and its centerpiece, the "Civil Order Pact", are waiting for a mouthpiece as well.
LAISSEZ FAIRE BOOKSHOP: Quite independent of this CD-ROM project LFB has produced a "virtual con 1 disk" on CD-ROM No. CU8014. It contains the Nov. 1998 convention of 19 libertarian scholars and SF authors by LIBERTY HQ & LIBERTY ROUND TABLE, offering, thanks to audio compression technology, over 21 hours of one-on-one interviews and joint conferences on a single CD-ROM. LANDMESSER, RALF, ralf@anarch.free.de When he recently (Feb. 02) saw my letter in ANARCHY, he reminded me that many years ago he had recommended the use of CD-ROMs to me. I had forgotten about that.

LEON F. (FELKINS), IMHO websites, leonf@perspicuity.net (L) (M) wrote 29.12.00: "I wish you the best of luck on this project. It think it has merit. I have a CD writer on my computer and I have compiled special CDs for reference. For example, I have a CD on Law/legal matters which I have downloaded from the Web. It includes glossaries and bibliographies. It makes it easy to find things even when the web may be down or I don't feel like logging in."
LEXREX, webmaster@lexrex.com www.lexrex.com has already reproduced on a single US $ 85 CD-ROM the whole over 160,000 pages of the AMERICAN FREEDOM LIBRARY OF The Western Standard Publishing Co., which in print on paper costs $ 11,000! It concentrates on some classical and constitutionalist writings. It was produced by World Book Encyclopaedia and or The Western Standard Publishing Company, and is called American Reference Library. "Largest Library of Historical and Official Documents Ever Assembled on One CD-ROM", containing over 55,000 source documents, mainly of interest to conservative libertarians. Other Libertarians have still to produce their equivalent to this collection. August 02 note: This CD is now also offered at least by LAISSEZ FAIRE BOOKS & by The Radical Academy Libertarian Books.
LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE by WOLRD LIBRARY, INC., 2809 Main St., Irvine, CA 92714, tel.: 714-756-9500. The 3rd edition has over 3,500 titles. I have seen it priced from A $ 20 for early editions to A $ 80 and also attached, as a freebee, with other software CDs, to computer magazines. It does contain some freedom titles, e.g. by J. S. Mill & Adam Smith. Its greatest importance is the example it sets for libertarians. How many such precedents do libertarians needs before they organize themselves sufficiently in this direction? According to one of my references, in text a 650 Mbs CD-ROM could carry 340,000 pages. Two of them could offer more than my 1779 microfiche! The contents would be easily searcheable and they would occupy even less space & be much lighter and portable, too.
LICHTSCHLAG, ANDRE F., (A) (L) (M) editor of "eigentuemlich frei", www.eifrei.delichtschlag@eifrei.de Book: www.der-markt.com/home/page.jsp?queryld=124 or: Lichtschlag at amazon.com. www.eifrei.de He may publish, perhaps in a shortened and edited version. ( and with the help of two other classical liberals), in print-on-demand, my first peace book, in German, which was microfiched in PP 399-401 & which is now available from me via e-mail, Winzipped, 579 Kbs.
LINCOLN INSTITUTE: It has put the works of Henry George onto 2 CD-ROMs, with some additional material: $ 50.

I think that there is software available that will download entire web sites all in one go." J.de R.: One of the projects I do want to do is to get all the original printed version of LR as pdf files on a CD. - I have made a CD of radio programmes about cryonics and immortalism, that I have collected over the past 20 years, for the Cryonics Institute - presumably they will publish it one day. However just listening to it would take several days - the programmes are highly compressed. At least you can listen to the radio whilst you are doing something else! - J.Z.: GREAT! At least another libertarian interest audio CD is thus already on offer and compressed, too, like the LFB CD, recording a 1998 libertarian conference. - All good things take time. So far life is all too short.

All the protectionist, anti-capitalist and anti-corporation prejudices of anarchists neatly assembled for refutation by free-market anarchists! If the discussion is exhaustive enough then, maybe, the antagonists will both end up as anti-monopolists, voluntarists, exterritorialists, autonomists, panarchists, polyarchists etc., rather than trying to impose their ideals upon all the dissenters in a country or the world.

TWINWORLDS.COM, INC., CD-ROM Books, www.twinworlds.cominfo@twinworlds.com Most of the single books it does so publish are just novels and advice books. But among its output is one CD ROM that reproduces 3 of the classics of H.G.Wells and another the compilation by Judson G. Banks: Famous Documents of Early Americana, 1999, $ 16.95. This one does not indicate the total number of items included, or the number of pages or Mbs. It is still up to libertarians to utilise the full text potential of CD-ROMs for their texts.
US ARMY, Website. X, Mr. X: 11 years ago, in an L.A. bookshop I met a guy from N.Y. who intended to put 500 anarchist books onto a CD-ROM. Then I was not interested enough in this option. ZAPATISTAS: "At the end of July 1996, some 2,000 sympathizers from forty-three nations met in Chiapas at the EZLN-sponsored "International Encounter for Humanity and Against Neo-Liberalism"" -- as a result of this meeting, supporters formed more than 400 new Zapatista civilian committees. (91) For those who could not attend the meeting in person, the Zapatistas are ready to move to CD-ROM format, making discs that would allow followers or sympathizers to visit their jungle strongholds via computer. Pelaez, durruti@inet.net mexico.html at flag.blackened.net Revolt collection: revolt.html at flag.blackened.net - As with most revolutionaries, their economics knowledge seems to be poor or absent and, like most "revolutionaries" they are still conservative as territorialists. It offers over 780 hypertext analyses, over 70 profiles of assassins, over 750 photos, over 100 questions and explanations. I do not remember the price I paid for it. Just one of thousands of available non-libertarian experts (make your own Google or other search! e.g. under CD-ROM publishing) for the production of one or several books on a CD-ROM, provided the material is already supplied in digitized form and also a possible model for production and distribution:
TEASE, CHRISTINE K., lexico@lexico.net, on Lexico Publishing Conditions, 9 Aug. 02: "Microsoft Word or any other compatible word processing program will work. If you are sending me the text, via email, and it has already been critiqued and there are no graphics involved, no sound and no animation, it would be in the neighborhood of $ 350 - 700 for a master CD from which you can make as many copies for distribution on your own as you like. I am assuming that you realize how much text alone it will take to totally fill a 650 Mbs disk? That will be a lot of work in itself. If I have to do a lot with the text, or you are adding extras, the price will go up from there. …"
For a survey of some of the electronic online and disk publishers & their specialities & conditions, see Wendy Butler at : www.publishing.about.com
But to compile and publish one or several libertarian libraries on CD-ROMs we cannot simply fob off to some professionals, unless we are millionaires! It will have to be largely a labor of love, enough love for our favorite libertarian texts!
