time, gazed on the peaks of the Alps behind him and the expanse of the lake below him, and searched for the fruits of these weeks of meditation. He found none. He did not realize that they were all there within him.
   He felt only that these weeks, the last carefree weeks he was to know for years to come, and which were to have been the finest of this year, had become the most difficult of his life so far. On a sudden impulse he descended, packed his suitcase the same evening, and, in the early hours of the next morning, was on his way across the lake to the farther shore.
