   Therefore he had to see people and their lives, not those of one country and one kind, but of all countries and kinds: the poor and the rich, the high and the low, the strong and the weak; he had to find out what kept them apart and what bound them together, in hatred and in love.
   He could hardly wait — he who was usually so calm.
   The spark in his eyes had not yet burst into flame — it was only smouldering. But the draught was soon to come which would kindle it into flame . . .
   It would come from outside.
   So out! — Out into the world! — — —
