Start with listing the rare titles in your private library. By all means add your comments to your favourites - and then agree to send your disks, in ASCII, to one centre. - For the time being, I would gladly receive them and add them to my bibliography compilation and so would, probably, Chris Tame and, may be, the New Zealand compilers associated with THE FREE RADICAL. - So many potentially very fruitful pro-freedom actions are still quite legal! - J.Z.

I browsed through Hazlitt's library at FEE, in 1990, and was surprised at how many important books that I happened to know of, where still missing in the library of such an important student and scholar of liberty. I considered this as evidence for the need of much more LMP. It contained many relatively modern and well known titles but NONE of the older ones that I was looking for for filming. - J.Z.

HAZLITT, HENRY, Understanding "Austrian" Economics, 12pp, from a special reprint from THE FREEMAN, Feb. 1981, in PP 23 & 24. - THE FREEMAN is one of the few libertarian journals which has arranged for the microfilming of its back issues (through University Microfilms), but it does not push this option, does not use it for the reproduction of its o.o.p. books, pamphlets and newsletters or to expand the range of its literature list. Until at least 1990 it did not even have a microfiche reading machine in its large library, which embodies the collection of Henry Hazlitt. It was one of the first libertarian think tanks. Will it be one of the last to adopt its micrographic options? I hope not. All its output is in beautiful print and would thus be easy to film. Moreover, if it succeeded in inducing even a small fraction of its supporters to become micrographically active as well, following its example,, then soon all freedom writings could become cheaply and permanently accessible in this format. - Why do so many people, who are otherwise radicals for liberty, stick, exclusively, with one of the worst kinds of traditions, here the expensive and risky addiction to print on paper, which restricts freedom of expression and information opportunities, and why do they hold back from starting a new tradition - by using new and very affordable freedom opportunities? Micrographics is an educational and scholarly medium and is thus eminently suitable for an educational institution like FEE. It would also tend to reduce the financial problems any such institution tends to have - and could make it still more productive. - If it could not persuade a sufficient number of its followers to take up this option, then what chance does it have to persuade them and others to take up other freedom options??? - J.Z.

How many of the reported evils would have long continued under a true laissez faire economy, based upon full monetary and financial freedom? The author seems to think that MORE WELFARISM is required or that his anarchist utopia would be a panacea or cure-all. But it is better to start such a discussion, even from the worst possible position, than to avoid it altogether or march or demonstrate in favour of GOVERNMENT providing more health services at the expense of taxpayers. I have still to see a march or demonstration for more self-help opportunities based upon individual rights and liberties, and, e.g., against legal tender and the central bank's issue monopoly. The slave mentality and that of slave riots is still with us. - J.Z.

(Heritage Foundation, I was informed, that it offers all its past publications on microfiche for only $ 250. That, I found out, later, applies only to their annual output and this subscription price is almost equal to their print on paper prices! Run by free market, anti-communist conservatives, as an otherwise efficient and influential think tank, along conventional lobby and publishing lines. It is innovative through the rapidity with which it produces papers on acute topics. But how competitive and sensible is it to offer the cheapest technological service at almost the same price as the most expensive one? Either there exists already a developed microfiche market or not. If it exists, then it ought to be used by market-like pricing, instead of pricing these fiche out of its potential market. If it does not exist as yet, then as high prices help to prevent its development. Is this the intention of these "free marketeers"? I rather hold that, as at the IEA, just the prejudice of ONE bottleneck decisionmaker is involved. The bureaucratic structures of most private organizations do enormous harm, too and give free enterprise and voluntaryism a bad name. - J.Z.)

HEWETSON, JOHN, Ill-Health, Poverty & the State, Freedom Press, 1946, 81pp: 60, in PP 1495. - Do most anarchists appreciate competitive health services, including insurance companies and coops? - J.Z.

Some truths on them tend to leak out only decades later - when it can no longer do them any harm. But the harm done due to the belief in "great leaders" is enormous. - J.Z., 2.1.98. - When I heard about his assassination I thought that the reporters must have got it wrong and that, rather, the other "great nuclear leader", Mr. K. ("We will bury you!"), had been assassinated. When the news was confirmed to me, I thought to myself: Well, he deserved it, too, for under him the nuclear arsenal of the U.S. had been doubled. This "anticommunists", too, did not distinguish in his targeting and with his "weapons" between communists and their victims behind the Iron Curtain, so that he prepared for the mass murder of innocents. Cities remained the main targets for many years for these "anti-people mass murder devices". - J.Z., 2.1.98, 25.5.98.
