Still heldthat to "preserve confidence" and at a fluctuating "gold price" -with goods and services marked in his paper pounds, his paperpounds ought to be redeemed in gold. To that extent he hadpre-WWI notions of "reforming" the gold standard and was notamenable to reasoning on the subject. I am under the impressionthat people who invent a value standard "fall in love with it"for the rest of their lives. This loves tends to stand up to all"disappointments", facts and arguments. (Through a friend he got a very unusual marriage present from me :monetary freedom fiche. But will he look down upon them even morethan he does upon paper money? Is he one of those practicionerswho believe that they already know all that needs to be known onthe subject? I am waiting for him to tackle unlimited clearingexchanges based on gold value reckoning, without any gold storageby and with him, using the free gold market as a sufficientindicator and free market rating of his standardized clearingcheques, if the Fed would let him get away with this. Trades inall kinds of goods and services should never be confined to theavailability of just one commodity. But one commodity CAN serveas a suitable, honest and sufficiently stable value standard forunlimited numbers of free exchanges, particularly when this isonly attempted within the framework of free choice of valuestandards. The medium of exchange does not have to be identicalwith the medium of account under freedom conditions and bothshould never be made identical via monetary despotism. Even aterritorially exclusive gold standard, unless and whileunanimously accepted, would be despotic. Even the best should notbe imposed but merely freely demonstrated to others. How does oneget this message across to gold bugs? In the meantime, hisprivate and competitive and non-coercive efforts to realize hisideal do provide a valuable experiment. J.Z.) ( I have not yet seen the book onhis system which he got recently published, in a low impression,by the Institute for Social Inventions in London. If theInstitute were to push the microfiche publishing option, it wouldat the same time push for a chance to get all social inventionspublished in full, not just in abstracts by the Institute. Theycould then be published, with the aid of micrographic agencies, by the innovators themselves, at very little cost to themselves.Their information problems could thus be solved.. Monetaryfreedom advocates were kept out of print and still are, probably, more than any other minority group of reformers. They do favourfreedom of exchange and yet they still do not seem to realize theunused and quite legal freedom of expression and informationopportunities that microfiche use can provide them with. Ficheneed the "readiness to accept" foundation among libertarians. Then they could even serve as a supplementary exchange mediumamong libertarians. They are already pretty much standardized, intheir size, format and in their production costs. They arelong-lasting and have a use value at home in this supposedinformation age. They are easily stored and transported forvalues up to a few hundred dollars. If a central distributioncentre were developed, for all or most of many libertarianmicrofiche publishers, then through it one could obtain thespecial fiche selections one wants, in exchange for one's ownfiche output and deposit to the centre or for one's fiche creditat the centre, established by transfers from others. How manylibertarian fiche producers would it take and what degree ofacceptance of the medium among the movement, in order to makesuch a fiche exchange possible, at least as an experimental pilotscheme. Game playing may be needed to popularized fiche as it wasneeded to popularized computers. Writers, editors, publishers, collectors, compilers and sponsors of useful information couldthen really "coin" their own "money" at least for thisinformation exchange game. The standard fiche would be the valuestandard of this game. Quantities of duplicates, each differentbut each also dealing with the same subject of interest to therecipient, would be the exchange medium. Since there could be nocompulsory acceptance, and people would compare them with othervalue standards, they could not be inflated. And since they couldbe competitively issued, they cound not be deflated. But forcirculation, at least within limited channels, they need aminimal acceptance within these channels. Network informationexchanges could become much more voluminous, intense andspecialized, not only among advocates of monetary freedom. J.Z.,24.5.89.) Like myfather, he believe that big money is necessary to push the casseof freedom. Thus his attempt to gather $10 million for hisFREEDOM Inc. project. The combined annual budget of the variouslibertarian think tanks may already go much beyond that and thefunds are largely wasted in all too expensive channels. Enoughlibertarians do already posses PCs and all could afford at leasta used microfiche reading machine - and this might be all thecapital equipment required to achieve enlightenment onlibertarian options, not only among libertarians but also amongthe general public, since in this way each libertarian, if hecould not BE a lighttower, at least he could HAVE ONE at hisdisposal. I have at least omitted one title, unintentionally, becausewithout a major search I cannot find in which fiche I placed it :The report of the School of Living on its conference : Movinginto the Frontlines of Social Change. I thought I had alreadyincluded Michael Oliver's A New Constitution for a New Country,in one of the latest fiche but, apparently, this has still not bedone but will be done as soon as I come across this work again.Regarding other omissions : Please point them out to me. And sendme more such material for filming - if you are not going to do ityourself. Contemplate : A handful of monetary freedom activists, usingphotocopiers and micrographics, could probably reproduce allmonetary freedom writings between them, on microfiche, within afew months. It could be an Archimedean leverage option for them. But will they see it, grasp it and use it? As much as I can do onmy own, with the help of some friends, I will do. More I cannot.LMP was never intended to be more than a pilot scheme for can bedone, needs to be done and ought to be done in this sphere. PIOT, largely through the fullest use of monetary andmicrographic freedom options! J.Zube, May. 89, 7 Oxley St., Berrima, NSW 2577, Australia, Tel. (048) 771 436.
