This site being a portal (to indeed many very valuable resources!) and an individualist one (and also a panarchist/exterritorialist one!), I have since long felt the need to offer a wide array of leads to the issues of Islam, Islam today probably being the strongest and most dangerous anti-individualist, collectivist, authoritarian, theocratic, totalitarian and imperialist force in the world. Muslims and in particular Arabs may have plenty of reasons to be filled with rage against more than one "Western" country, the United States in partícular, but they should also be infuriated against themselves. Their problems are home-made to a large extent and result for the most part from being guided by a religion (and those farts with beards who from their pulpits, from the offices of their oil holdings and the harems of their latifundia so devilishly use or misuse it against their rank and file and the rest of the world) which has not had its urgently needed reformation yet.

It is essential therefore to support the progressive forces within Islam, so that it may once again become the great contributor to human civilization it had once been (?)(probably only where it has been mitigated by a mixture with some other culture) instead of being the greatest terrorist pain in the ass, next to that Texan clique.

~~~
Now then, follow the, also ~~ temporarily ~~ bearded guide, yours truly, and Ali Baba to the Fourty Thieves' following formerly hidden treasure-cave of information. Open sesame!
C.B.
PS: I think, and I am not the only one to do so, that reform of Islam will essentially come from within and will be operated by two groups. First of all women, and this process is far gone already, in some places at least, eMANcipate themselves. Secondly, sexual minorities (the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex and "questioning" crowd) start to come out everywhere in Muslim countries and help drawing world-wide attention to some of the worst and SCANDALOUS
    In Iran mullahs' henchmen publicly hanged two young boys in Edalat (Justice) Square in Mashhad
    http://www.ncr-iran.org/content/view/222/69/
    And with, in addition, some awful Western responsibility thrown in, in particular from our beloved sweet EU. Power and money politics...
    [added July 27, 2005]
aspects of those theocracies or approaching, to the displeasure of those bearded farts. And those worst aspects are also confronted by women and sexual minorities outside Muslim countries, in those places where there is large Muslim immigration, which unfortunately also includes a small, but dangerous, portion of fundamentalists and terrorist nutcases. Let us support the progressive forces within Islam, those who are for the primacy of reason and tolerance over religious fanaticism and theocratic despotism and monopoly.
Here is the place to draw attention for instance to an organization in the United States not mentioned on the link list below:
Al-Fatiha
This .org site has not been updated since almost two years though. Another .net site does not exist anymore. The up-to-date website of Al-Fatiha (supposedly financed by a grant from the Gill Foundation) is mentioned all over the place, but I cannot find it. Google is of no help here. So I suggest that you go to their Yahoo! group till further notice.
On this site you can read an Op-Ed by Al-Fatiha's founder Faisal Alam:
Gay Media's Failure to Accurately Report Stories Adds to Growing Islamaphobia and Hatred Towards Islamic World
An Op-Ed by Faisal Alam on this website. You'll find it here.
Dear Faisal, you are very biased and dishonest here by pushing the texts under the rug, wanting to make your religion look better than it is. Its good sides do not make the bad sides disappear. While the "assault on law-abiding Muslims" is certainly wrong, provided they abide by universal civilized laws and values and by laws in their Western democracies of residence that are consistent with these universal humanist values, but they should be assaulted when they abide by some of the barbaric laws contained in your shariah. When you say that the Western gay media "jumped quickly to condemn the execution", this in my eyes is a scandalous statement. They could actually not jump quickly enough! And this is certainly not "hysteria". It is good that you draw the attention to great failures of the United States in this field, but these failures are simply no excuse for what is happening in several Muslim countries. If the United States still have the death penalty, even defended by some libertarians, and have been executing minors till very recently, they nevertheless kill murderers for instance and not people for simply committing homosexual acts resulting from desires that are in nature and thus your Allah or our God must have created them. The "execution of civilians" and the "killing of homosexuals" is certainly within your religious laws. It is easy to say that your religion condemns the killing of innocents (see the recent fatwas in England and Germany about this), but how hypocritical when people who are, by all decent human standards, innocent, are declared by your religious texts as guilty, as is the case for homosexuals. I think that you are doing a disservice to the majority of Muslims who are indeed decent people, as I can testify from my own experiences, but few have spoken out and only very recently, very late, against the horrors a minority commits and does claim to be based on your religious texts. And unfortunately they can base their crimes on those texts. You better skip your religion and any other one also. You can be a good human being without revealed religion. Why does the majority of Muslims want to stay in the dark Middle Ages or even return to them? The other religions after all have freed themselves from that past, though there are a few stragglers and late-comers there too...
C.B.
[added August 1, 2005]
Trying to remain fair or to become it again, should I maybe not have been now and then, I am documenting hereafter a press release which is worth reading and considering. I am always eager, in my former magazine "interferences", in this group of websites and in this rubric to let opposite views express themselves. I have my opinions, others have theirs, but I do not want to impose one opinion and only one, in particular in this rubric. People should think for themselves and will be helped in finding a good position if they get access to more than one opinion. The reader who can follow arguments between opposing parties is always in the best position, the more neutral third one.
Referring to the press release below, I would of course neither associate the majority of Muslims nor Islam in itself with terrorism. But I would certainly associate the religion with intolerance and a good deal of violence. It is too easy when Muslims always talk of their religion of peace. You can find enough proof of the will for peace in the texts, but you can also find enough texts to the contrary. As long as you have that second kind, the first kind cannot be considered as very valid. But the main problem is, and that is a very real danger, that in most Muslim countries, more so than in the other countries, the majority is extremely backward and retarded in their knowledge and education and this allows malevolent, sometimes insane leaders to make easy prey of the masses.
I have the feeling that those masses are very scared (it's by creating fear that despots rule, there is no difference here between those backward countries and our supposedly more advanced ones), they are so unfree in their collectivist corset of family, customs, traditions, beliefs and guidance by leaders, that many are sort of crying for help and at the same time too weak to accept it, should it come along. Observing their women around here, often wrapped up like mummies, many obviously in that condition not out of their free will, I get the impression that Islam is the religion of bondage. Yes, like in those porn magazines. I got this impression in particular yesterday, having had the occasion to watch such a forlorn looking mummy in the main railroad station here. It's the second or third one that struck me like that in recent days. There are the other ones of course, but this type is conspicuously everywhere. If I except those that never get out of "their" house. Each time I am tempted by the idea to hand them my calling card and tell them that they should contact me should they need help, which they certainly do. But I don't do it, as I am still clinging to my life...
Imaan Press Release - LGBT Muslims Urge Unity
August 1, 2005
Imaan statement - LGBT Muslim representatives urge unity in the wake of the London bombings
Imaan, the organisation for LGBT Muslims, issued af statement in the aftermath of the initial London bombings on the 7th July, condemning the atrocities and calling for Britain to stand united and to resist attempts to scapegoat the Muslim community for the acts of individuals. We were proud to be part of the Mayor of London's memorial events the following week, when London remembered those who tragically died in these appalling circumstances.
We echo the calls from Azad Ali, Chair of the Muslim Safety Forum, who has called on the Home Office to ensure that there is a clear distinction made between Islam and terrorism. The days following the attacks on 7th July saw the murder of a Pakistani man, many attacks on the muslim community ranging from verbal and physical abuse to attacks on Mosques, property and businesses
In this climate, we are concerned at attempts by some gay and lesbian organisations to ban Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi from entering Britain. We believe such calls contribute to a confusion between Islam and terrorism which is profoundly wrong. We believe that the association of Islam with the recent bombings, as in Galha's statement that Britain is "reeling from the kind of extreme violence that is spawned by his religion", will only result in divisions between the Muslim and LGBT Communities. We join with others in Britain and internationally who have rejected any association between Islam and terrorism and have pointed out that if these atrocities were committed in the name of Islam, those perpetrating them are wrong and deluded.
Dr. Al-Qaradawi, a senior Islamic cleric, has unrelentingly condemned the London bombings. As an LGBT Muslim organisation, we do not agree with Dr. Al-Qaradawi on the issue of homosexuality. However, we restate, particularly at this critical time, that it is highly divisive to single Islam out as being uniquely reactionary on this matter, when a range of other faith leaders hold to views which are also reactionary with regard to homosexuality. Dr. Qaradawi speaks on behalf on many people - gay and straight - who have genuine concerns about Palestine, Iraq and the huge problems in the wider Muslim world, due to Western interference in Muslim lands. Instead of trying to shut out these views, we should be promoting an environment where people can feel free to speak out and discuss these vitally important issues.
In order to isolate and defeat terrorists of the kind we have seen in London in the last fortnight, it is critical to welcome and work with the Muslim community, who have expressed willing to work with the police. This necessarily involves the immediate end to any demonisation of Islam and the Muslim community. It is only through open and honest dialogue that we can forge a path to peace. Trying to ban people like Qardawi will only create more tension and resentment.
We call upon all those within the LGBT community to stand united with the Muslim community. The bombs in London were designed to divide us, to isolate communities from one another and to whip up fear and terror of each other. Imaan stands against this. Any attempt to utilise Islamophobia, under the cover of homophobia or via other means, will only impact heaviest on the LGBT Muslim community and will be counterproductive to garnering effective relations with the Muslim community at this critical time.
INTERNET TOOLBOX FOR ISLAM-CRITICS
Islam is a global challenge. It should be met with a global response. The perfect instrument for doing this is the Internet, the most international medium of all. As many news outlets may still be reluctant to openly criticize Islam, the Internet opens the possibility of a freer discourse on such subjects than more traditional media do. The intention behind this Toolbox is to encourage more people to use the Internet as a way of getting critical discussion of Islamic issues out to the general public. Any person who wants to is very welcome to copy this list or any parts of it that they may find interesting to their own websites. The Toolbox is a work in progress, and everybody is encouraged to add more "tools" of their own.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PEOPLE WORKING TO EXPOSE ISLAM:
The easiest thing you can do if you are concerned about Islam and what it is doing to the world is using the Internet. Email the links to some of the websites by ex-Muslims that are listed further down to friends, family, colleagues and everybody you know. You may include other Islam-critical websites such as http://www.jihadwatch.org/ . This is free, and takes very little of your time, while increasing the knowledge of Islam in the general public.
If you want to spend a little bit of money, try buying some books about Islam. Give them as gifts to friends and family. Write an invitation inside to some of the websites mentioned below. Order them from your local bookstore, which will make them aware of these titles and maybe order more of them. Write online reviews of good Islam-critical books on websites such as http://www.amazon.com/ .
Help and support the work of ex-Muslims and their organizations in any way you can, as well as everybody else who suffers because of Islamic intolerance.
Some of the recommended books about Islam are:
I still have the older version on my site. I will work on it as I get the time to do it. Feedback is welcome. You can and should also go to the Internet Toolbox for Islam-critics - News about Islam part, the above link being the entrance page and more the background part, so I added "Background information", as is indicated on the page itself.
This is an interesting book review here:
I wrote a brief review on this back a year ago (see below) where I saluted the brave souls speaking out that had forsaken dogmatic religion.
I am a secular humanist, and an ardent admirer of Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins. My culture is Hindu and I am very proud of it. However, let me say at the outset that it does no good to forsake fundamentalist Islam and become a fundamentalist Hindu.
Since I wrote my review, many new reviews including ones by Muslims have appeared on this book. Understandably, Muslims are not going to rate this book highly. However, some of their diatribes about the apostates are merely that - frustrated rantings and ravings. As an example, to Yaseen from Oakland, I say that you must have peanut sized brains if you believe that a 1400 year old text is the literal word of God. The Quran is at best a historical text that represents the creation myths of the Arabs. Likewise the Bible and the Bhagvad Gita represent the creation myths of the Jews/Christians and the Hindus.
Over the past year I have been given several books by a colleague at work who is a devout and tolerant Muslim. These books seek to reconcile the Quran with the findings of modern science. Unfortunately, even a cursory reading of this Islamic propaganda is enough to show the hollowness of these wildly stretched claims. One of the key points these books make is that you have to read the text in the original Arabic to truly appreciate how well the Quran foretells modern scientific findings. Strange indeed must be a universal God that needs his readers to understand perfect Arabic (of all languages!) to get his message. There is no mention in these books that the Quran endorses the creation of Adam from dust and Eve from his rib. I would like to know how anyone with more than a peanut size brain can believe this ridiculous story in the light of findings of evolutionary science.
I have no difficulty understanding that all Muslims are proud of their cultural heritage and revere the Prophet. He was in probability a very wise man whose teachings were relevant to the times that he lived in. I will not quarrel with Muslims that the Prophet may have improved the lot of women in those times.
However, taking the Quran as the literal word of God today and the only source of knowledge has led to a decline in Islamic societies. Look everywhere around the world - to quote President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, Muslims are the most backward of all societies. Muslims are either killing fellow Muslims or are being exploited by non-Muslims. Witness how a small country like Israel with 5 million odd Jews is able to dictate terms to the entire Islamic world. The world's only superpower (led by a fundamentalist Christian President who claims that the same God of the Old Testament gave him the green signal !) can invade and occupy an Islamic country with impunity in a war that has killed many thousands of Muslims and face no more than a few whimpers from Islamic governments.
Here in the US, Muslims are viewed with suspicion and fairly or unfairly, as Yaseen from Oakland states 'venom is being spewed on Islam'. In my native India, it appears that most of the outsourcing boom has conferred wealth and comfort on the scientifically educated Hindus while leaving the Madrasa educated Muslims way behind. This is rapidly leading to an explosive two-tier society.
Meanwhile Islamic leaders and clergy are spreading the 'reassuring' message that Islam is the world's fastest growing religion. Whereas this growth may be true, how does that really matter? Most of the people who convert to Islam are likely to be underpriviledged minorities or poor or disaffected in some way. How will it help if a 100 years from now half the human population is Muslim, is poor and is exploited by the non-Muslim half ?
This whole sad state of affairs is not likely to change until Muslims accept modernization and stop believing that all truth flows from the Quran. Sadly the Muslims can believe what they want but the universe will not care - it will go inexorably on. Ultimate power for humankind will rest with those who open their minds and accept the scientific way to harness the forces of Mother nature.
The true heroes of today should not be Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad or Krishna but great secular scientists and philosophers like Stephen Hawking and Bertrand Russell.
CB: At the beginning of the book review the "(see below)" refers to that link just above, but the link doesn't seem to lead anymore to the earlier review meant by the author. That was a very interesting one and my unsuccessful attempts so far to reach the author are the main reason why this page has not been uploaded earlier. I do not know if I still have the text somewhere. I'll try to find it later. The above is the post right after the TOOLBOX by one of the most prolific participants in the forum, "everybee", who gave me permission to use his post and quote.
Important: This web page now replaces the following announcement under the same URL:
This important and extensive resource will be available very soon! It was almost ready on September 18, 2004. Only slight corrections and a few small additions had still to be implemented and in one case a copyright secured. Then some circumstances prevented me from doing it right away and I simply forgot about the whole thing, being so very busy with many others and with the Badnarik for President campaign. By the way, he is the man all Arab-Americans and Muslim Americans should absolutely vote for on November 2, in spite of different endorsements by most of their organizations. Be principled and conscionable like Michael Badnarik himself is. He is the only candidate that will bring about Peace. And quickly. Minor differences in views that may clash with some of your more traditional ones are secondary here. He is also more strongly for religious liberty than the other two major candidates. Stop invasions! Peace above all!
