History of my Gay section
~~~
Reading all of the following (in chronological order) before going to the home page of this section, will help a good deal to understand all future comments on the main page.
Preliminary remark ~ All those excellent links on this page were valid at the time of first publication by me. In the meantime, a few have become broken links, meaning that you either get to an error page or, if you are lucky, at least a search page. It is up to you then to operate the bothersome search. I would like to do it for you, but with the thousands of links on my websites and the daily changing situation (and no staff at my disposal!) I simply cannot do this job, except in only a small number of cases. Sometimes the page has been moved on the site and you are at least given the new URL or told that it is in the archives and how to reach and use those. Very often, especially with online editions of newspapers, the text which was accessible for free is moved to a section where you have to pay. I do not consider those practices as very decent. Therefore I will try in future not to link to sites that do not offer at least some guaranties to keep their offerings available more permanently. I have a few ideas on how to do that.
gay flag
On the occasion of Hamburg's Gay Pride week (June 6 through June 15), Gay Pride week-end (June 13 through June 15) and today (June 14)'s marvellous Gay Pride parade, commemorating the Stonewall Inn riots in New York's Greenwich Village in June 1969 [I had spent six weeks in Big Apple at the turn of the years 1968 and 1969, probably unknowingly preparing those riots . . . ;-)] and the beginning of the modern world-wide Gay Liberation movement (and therefore formerly called here "Stonewall", now "CSD", for Christopher Street Day, that Stonewall Inn having been located at No. 53 of that street), I spontaneously decide to open a Gay Section on this website (which I clearly had never intended). Find out why!
[Saturday, June 14, 2003]
First of all, as I said on my home page on June 14, 2003, the decision to open this section was a spontaneous one, it had never been planned. It has been prompted though by the following:
a) the special impact that this year's marvellous Hamburg Gay Parade has had on me;
b) a circular letter by e-mail a visitor felt compelled to address to the webmaster (maybe naively, unsuspectingly, thinking that I would agree, or else as a not so subtle attack against my not being, in these after 9/11 Patriot Act and Iraq War II times, sufficiently pro-American, at least in the eyes of some mainstream Bible Belt stars and stripes aficionados, being not so comfortable with the eight, seven or current six striped rainbow flags, be they gay or only pacifist. You can read the circular hereafter.
But before you read it, I suggest that you pay a visit to
"Stonewall and Beyond: Lesbian and Gay Culture," the online edition of a Columbia University Libraries exhibition held from May 25 to September 17, 1994. New York: Columbia University Libraries, 1995. URL: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/eresources/exhibitions/sw25/index.html
Let me quote from one of the exhibits the sentence
"Before we loathe the homosexual as anarchist against Nature, as renegade toward religion, as pariah in society, as monster in immorality, as criminal in law, let us feel sure that we have considered well whatever the complex mystery of Life presents as his defense .... "
so that, on your return from the online exhibition, you may better "enjoy" the following Bible Belt missive:
Latest news
Regarding the cocker spaniel mentioned above in that religious right propaganda, read the following:
Woman talks friend out of suicide; police shoot her dog
"A [Milwaukee] woman who had just talked a friend out of suicide had her pet cocker spaniel shot to death by a police officer called to her house. Then the officer handed Valerie Mueller a $120 citation for having her dog, Sprite, outside without a leash." (06/20/03)
[From http://startribune.com/stories/1451/3947380.html quoted by Rational Review]
Was the police officer a member of the religious right thinking that Valerie Mueller had a sexual relationship with her cocker spaniel? :-)
As we all know from that blood spilling Old Testament, death penalty is required for being out of the norm, thus obliging that Old Testament God. Poor God, sorry, dog!
The world can and should rejoice!
The United States of America yesterday finally entered the age of modern civilization (if I forget about capital punishment for a minute). It was about time. The Europeans (for instance the French in 1810) did that a long time ago. Of the famous slogan
MAKE LOVE NOT WAR
the first half "Make Love" has now become reality. The second half "Not War" is still in the making. So the Americans will be limping for a while, but we will be glad to offer them some crutches, won't we? :-) My congratulations go to the Texan Longhorns (by all means take this as double entendre!), a special hello to Lubbock, and, of the other States concerned, to Kansas and Missouri! Read all about this Supreme Court decision in the "Austin American-Statesman".
[June 27, 2003]
The Texas Taliban . . .
"And so we bid farewell to the Texas Taliban as they ride into the legal sunset. The Supreme Court has finally put an end to a long line of theocrats and theojudges who told consenting adults what they could do to whom and with which body parts."
Isn't this just darling? And the formulation is by a woman. Men are so often cowardly (or simply dumbly) un-outspoken . . .
For my fundamentalist (yeah, just like the Wahhabis) Christian readers who had triggered the creation of this section the following, found on the website of Madd Maxx:
I've found this on a few web sites and thought it might interest you - it is the final verse of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" by Julia Ward Howe.
"In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me;
As He died to make men holy let us die to make men free!
While God is marching on."
(emphasis added)
Does your church's hymnal contain this verse?
CB: So far for Madd Maxx for the time being. The above poem was first published in The Atlantic Monthly, February 1862, Volume 9, No. 52, page 10.
[July 2, 2003]
"Bush's favorite Supreme Court Justice"
"Picture yourselves ten years from now with a majority of Scalias on the bench."
"Bush's adoration of the man who wrote one of the most despicable and hate-filled dissents in the history of jurisprudence should be among the top reasons to do everything in your power to defeat George Bush in 2004."
Read  The Scalia Dissent in Lawrence v. Texas: Hateful Diatribe from the Morals Police by Elaine Cassel
Another good reason to call this section Gay I discovered today (2 December 2003), and this beats it all: Boy punished for talking about gay mom. How utterly insensitive, how Procrustean those statist "pedagogues", that do not deserve the name, can be, in their arrogance to mold young individuals into their collectivist frame. That teacher and that principal were lucky not to have to do with me and my strong reaction, as a kid a few years older, when someone had insulted my mother! Only recently, as my readers may know, I had reacted to such a deep insult in a way that got me into a long lasting detestable lawsuit that I won at all levels, but which for more than a year ruined my finances, my health and had a detrimental effect on my websites. Now I can only shake my head and deplore that America is so often such a terribly backward country imposing so much harm on the souls and bodies of its citizens. Liberty is just in the window, not in the shop. Or only a statue... Dear Lesbian mother(s), opt for homeschooling!!!
PS: Yes, I know that these basic problems are universal, and that the enemies of liberty, with their power of office and money, the latter commanding ever improving technology, and their billions of branch offices in the heads of the people unfortunately, are very active everywhere in the present worldwide Restoration period of things a few years ago we had hoped to be definitely vanquished. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine that around here where I live and in most parts of Europe, such a thing could happen these days. Tolerance seems to have become more mainstream here.
PS 2 (12 December 2003): Here is an article that describes rather well and in more detail what actually happened: http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/index.cfm?news_id=29023
[December 2, 2003/December 12, 2003]
More recent comments than the above, starting with August 2003 (with the single exception of the above one of December), are now to be found continuously and only in my weblog "merrygayhorny" on the home page of this section.
