Addendum
~~~
At the recent ALA Midwinter Meeting, the Intellectual Freedom Committee began to consider some changes to the statement.  These have not yet been approved, so the document stands as it is documented on the previous page. Final approval of any changes will come at the ALA Annual Conference in July 2000.
I will, on this web site, let you know after July what the changes are, if any. I am myself very eager to know. I hope the changes, if any, will mean a still stronger stand against the present increased attempts at censorship, not a compromise with them, which would be a dangerous step backwards. I could imagine that the American Library Association (ALA) now wants to add statements regarding the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web (WWW), and the use of it within libraries and other educational institutions (schools, colleges, etc.).
For the pursuit of our intellectual happiness, and for freedom and intelligence to enter our social and intellectual lives in triumph, we do not need a quadriga, a troika will do:
Books and Periodicals | Microfiches*| PCs and the Internet with the WWW | Censorship
