Oronzo Renna extra
Today I have added an extra to the online exhibition of Oronzo Renna which had been complete since September 19, after the second addition.
The main entrance to the exhibition is here.
Oronzo's second exhibition in meatspace and in New Zealand will open soon, on January 9 (preview on January 8). Details here and here.
Then Oronzo will spend several weeks in Australia, which he knows well for having travelled there extensively before, to be followed by his return to Europe: Hamburg, Germany and Italy. You will hear more then. Stay tuned!Posted by Christian Butterbach @ 08:26 PM GMT+1 [Link]

Christmas in a War Zone
There is a new guest column by Wendy McElroy on this site. And by just reading the above title you will never guess what it is about. You better see for yourself: http://www.butterbach.net/wendy/w2.htm. And, before entering the page, better wear a bulletproof sense-of-humour vest. This is Wendy. Wendy McElroy. Picture taken on May 2, 2002. I have to confess that I have thirty important and highest quality essays she sent me for publication still waiting in a folder to be published on my site... I just did not find the time to deal with them fully, meaning: after I read them, though I did not really have to, as I could trust them blindly to be good for publication, I could not upload them for lack of time to do the coding. Today I finally got around to at least publish a first one, the latest one received, of today, December 16, 2003. The others will follow, as I get to it, starting with the second-latest till all are online. New ones I will receive will be published before I add to the list of the older ones. I am to blame for not having published those that are very topical, practically all of them, at the right moment, but the quality of reasoning and of the information in those articles is such that they will stand time and you will be glad to have them permanently on my site for reference. More on Wendy on a special page in preparation. You can reach her at mac at ifeminists.net. Visit her home page and blog at http://www.zetetics.com/mac/ and drop by ifeminists.com.

Suicide bombers
"The supply of guys smart enough to be successful suicide bombers, but dumb enough to be willing to do it is finite. If they're not running out now, they will be."
This rational reason for hope is expressed by Glenn Reynolds in his blog, where it already had been posted on 5/20/2002, saying that the Palestinians may now be "stuck with the B-Team".
I wish that this corresponds to the truth and reality. If you want to read all about it, please consider that my link leads to the old address, the new one (http://64.247.33.250/) seems to be unreachable at the moment.

Have you ever had to bury a child?First quote:
"Have you ever had to bury a child? Have you ever had your heart irreparably broken by the bomb of a foreign invader? Do you know what it is like to face the rest of your life, after your cherished offspring have been prematurely taken from you by the forces of a country that claims to be bringing you the benefits of liberty and freedom? Do you know the horror of being told that it was all just a terrible mistake?
That's right. Oops! We made a boo-boo! Sorry!"
Second quote:
"Why do they hate us? Maybe it would be more appropriate to ask, "Why shouldn't they hate us?" We have bombed their homes and deposed their rulers only to replace those regimes with banana republics that leave the people in worse conditions than they had known before. Our President declares that you are either with him or against him and if you stand against him you will die. Too bad if you want no part of the fight that is brewing' you are the ones who will be forever remembered as 'collateral damage'."
Both quotes are from the article Deadlier suppositions by R. Lee Wrights. Please read it here.
Bring them home for Christmas!

"How laws are made (A process almost as aesthetically unpleasing as that by which sausages are made.)"

Bravo! Bravissimo!
"If any government regulator attempts to impose censorious requirements upon us, said regulator will be invited to attempt anatomically unlikely acts upon his or her own person."
The full text this quote is taken from you must read:

How refreshing, especially these days, when the French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin is hypocritically suggesting at the "World Summit on the Information Society" (WSIS 2003) of the United Nations in Geneva that the Internet should be governed by "international rules" overseen by the United Nations in order to guarantee "network security" and "deal with content while respecting freedom (of expression)."
In spite of having been an early At-Large Member of ICANN (or maybe because of it) I am not the biggest fan of ICANN and certainly not of the American government as the ghost writer behind it, but the United States STILL offer a much larger amount of freedom of speech than most other countries. So it is better for everyone to leave the thing as it is for the time being (pending MUCH better solutions), in sort of private hands (albeit not those of John Postel anymore, sob!), instead of having more dirty government paws meddling with it. Sorry France, sorry Germany (et caetera!), you cannot be trusted here!... And, dear Saudi Arabia, we do not want a hijab over the screen of our monitor. :-(PS of 12 December: I recommend to read Is the Empire Striking Back? by Glenn Harlan Reynolds on the implications of this Geneva summit and the future of the Internet, the future of free speech. At issue is for instance article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Libertarianism for dummies"There are only two ideologically meaningful categories. There is libertarianism and there is authoritarianism. Today's left and right belong in the authoritarian camp, along with every other ism in history that places the power of the group above the sovereignty of the individual. The only difference between Pol Pot's killing fields and Bill Clinton's 'I feel your pain' paternalism is a matter of degree."The above is a quote from a commentary on Liberty for All by Garry Reed; the full text can be found atMob rule"Frankly, if I had my choice between dealing with the real Mafia and dealing with the organized criminals in government, I think I'd choose the Mafia. They can only control a small area, they don't pretend to be victimizing me for my own good, and I might actually be able to convince my fellow citizens to help me rise up against them. The government, on the other hand, controls vast amounts of territory, tells me it's victimizing me for my own good and the good of others, and has enough people brainwashed into believing its lies that it's nearly impossible to convince them to fight back. Give me Don Corleone over Don Rumsfeld any day. Better yet, arm the population and let us rid ourselves of both."The above is a quote from a commentary on Strike the Root by Michael Tennant; the full text can be found atMy attention to the above two gems was drawn by Rational Review News Digest [RRND]. A Tale of Two Genocides;
A brief analysis of the similarities between the attacks on two American cultures,
American Indian and American Firearms
by Patrick K Martin
This is an important, clarifying, enlightening essay I recommend for reading to all my visitors, especially those that have read my editorial Guns introducing the article "Why Did it Have to be ... Guns?" by L. Neil Smith. Those left-liberals and other people disliking guns will gain useful insights and will be reminded of the sentence "Mass-Murderers Agree: Gun Control Works" and of Hitler, Stalin, Mao.Posted by Christian Butterbach @ 04:48 PM GMT+1 [Link]
