2005 Happy New Year

Belated good wishes on behalf of John Zube and myself for the new year that has just begun. I was too ill to be able to write anything earlier. More on this new situation soon.

Open Mind Festival 1986

Open Mind Festival 1986

18 years ago, in November 1986, took place the now legendary Open Mind Festival at Kerpen-Manheim near Cologne, Germany (lasting from November 18 to November 23 ~~ I and my tomcat Raffi stayed there even longer than those 6 days and nights!). I pity all those who did not experience this Forum for Social and Individual Evolution at all or even not all of it. First-class speakers, first-class audience, but really varied and international, the crème de la crème of the most radical you could find among the libertarian-minded. We managed to completely get along without any American speakers. This is just not done... ;-) It's at Kerpen that I first met John Zube, I knew his father slightly though from before. As this event is to be considered one of the main inspirations for my personal, largely anarchist, development as well as for my later web pages (though my anarchist development at that time already had a very long history, but it sort of got consecrated then and there), I will have to return to the subject very often and in much detail in the future, also to become intellectually somewhat less dependent on the USA, trying to widen the, as we have to admit, after all sometimes very narrow, above all American-nationalist, horizon of libertarianism.

The festival had been organized by the equally legendary FREENETWORK. Its founder, André Spies, when about to head for other activities, actually had asked me and given the permission to continue his work with this, but then circumstances had changed so quickly in such a way as to make an already difficult job even more difficult, so that I have not yet been able to deal with the huge task, but I will have to get back at this also in the coming months and years.

Now to the occasion and my reason for drawing your attention to the Open Mind Festival precisley today: On this very day, 18 years ago exactly, Stefan Blankertz had given a lecture at the festival, which, like so many others, had strongly impressed me and he had handed me the text of the lecture before running off to an urgent other appointment. I had kept this text over all those years in a simple suspended folder which would rather have deserved to be called a treasure chest. My life after that left me little time to rummage in treasure chests and make full use of the treasures, as it had much more profane things to boot on my neck. But all this time the desire and intention to publish precisely this text had never left me. At first the times were still pre-Internet, but now the Net makes it more easy of course. So I recently wrote to the author, who had given me such pleasure all those years with his publications, his particular style and way of thinking, to ask for permission to reprint. It turned out that Stefan Blankertz did not remember the circumstances (so much had happened since then), did not even have the text anymore, so that it would have had to be considered missing, had not some crazy collector and fan like me kept it carefully. Now then, the text is as good now as it was then, it did not age, and I consider it to be very very topical, on the one hand because that raping EU Constitution is about to be ratified in some countries (for instance Luxemburg) by referendum, on the other hand because here in Hamburg on Saturdays the pedestrian areas are swarming not only with scientologists (with an s like in snake oil), but also with green advocates propagandizing the introduction of referendums, with their red stripes or borders... Rape is nothing new: Starting with the QUOD LICET JOVI NON LICET BOVI and via the IUS PRIMAE NOCTIS a straight path is leading to our present situation, where everything is forbidden which is not explicitly allowed, except of course for the masters and big shots. Any crime is legitimate if perpetrated by the State and its servants and accomplices, murder, robbery, theft,... you name it.

The German essay bears the title "Noch ein Tschernobyl, wenn das Volk es Wyhl!", which means "Another/one more Chernobyl if people want it!". The pun cannot be translated; the German word for want here is will, but the author spells it Wyhl, which sounds almost the same, rhymes with Tschnernobyl if you put the accent on the last syllable (in German normally it would be on the second last), and is also the name of a town in the southwest of Germany, in a region which is the warmest in whole Germany, therefore well known for its wine, fruit and also tobacco. Wyhl used to be a centre of the tobacco industry. Some astute readers no doubt will establish a relationship between this changeable element and the author's Gestalt. :) Wyhl became famous though in the seventies of the last century when it had been chosen to be the location for one of the new nuclear plants to be built then, but numerous citizens' initiatives from the whole of Germany, but mainly from the south of Baden and nearby Alsace in France, had succeeded in preventing this, thus saving a unique landscape of Auenwälder (a type of wood growing alongside rivers on regularly flooded leas). The essay is here, more information about the author is here. But I would like to complete the latter with the following: Dr. Stefan Blankertz took a doctor's degree in sociology at the university of Münster (Prof. Christian Sigrist) with a thesis on Paul Goodman (Title: "Kritischer Pragmatismus. Zur Soziologie Paul Goodmans", Wetzlar 1983: Büchse der Pandora). His postdoctoral thesis for lecturing qualification bears the title "Legitimität und Praxis. Zur erziehungswissenschaftlichen Relevanz angelsächsischer Schulkritik". He has produced numerous publications and lectures on subjects dealing with criticism of the state, anarchism and classical liberalism, which, of course, I cannot mention all here. What do we have all those bookstores and libraries for? :) He was already then German representative of Libertarian International as well as one of the founding principals of the Institut für Handel und Wandel, Berlin, and also co-founder of the Herwig Blankertz Institut für pädagogische Forschung, Münster. Today he is the German representative of ISIL, the International Society for Individual Liberty.

Open your mind!

Interview with presidential candidate EXCLUSIVELY on BUTTERBACH.NET

Liberty in an Election Year: An Interview w/Michael Badnarik

Next week the interview will also be accessible in print for those who are near a newsstand in the New Jersey tri-state area. Look for "The Aquarian". Online it's only available on the group of sites of "The Exterritorial Imperative".

Even John Zube, whose weblog I am posting this into, and who is even more strongly against voting than I am and for very good reasons, has lately seen some merit in supporting Badnarik in this important election. Do the same!

This is my third trespass into John Zube's Weblog, but I feel quite sure that he will not mind. This WARNING text is in German. For those who do not read German, an English one may follow...

WARNUNG

Lesen bildet.

Second trespass!

John being still busy with his Windows XP® and other computer problems :-) and the sending around of his first libertarian CD-ROM and the corresponding about it, plus of course his intensive and extensive other work, consisting, among other things, in scanning in and digitizing or microfiching and commenting and then mailing, so many of the most valuable libertarian texts of which hardly anyone has discovered, saved from oblivion and promoted more than he has done so far and continues to do, it is understandable that he does not get the time to post to his weblog, and even is not very eager to, as he has more important things to do ~ and has no need for maybe running into some additional computer problems... ;-)

So his webmaster has to get at grip on that quill again and put a few lines in here, preventing this blog from being considered completely dead...

I take the opportunity to draw your kind attention to the very topical world-wide "problem" of MIGRATION, being discussed most everywhere these days, more specifically the immigration so many Western governments are complaining about. If there is a problem, and it is not that sure that there is one, if we consider the basic fact, not the sometimes very tragic circumstances (see http://www.butterbach.net/albania.htm for instance), who is responsible for it? Who else than the national territorial state! As even libertarians are split on the subject, it will be a good idea to do the following:

There is even one by John Zube! ;-)

Migrating through these pages is more fun and certainly less life-endangering (though very much prejudice endangering!) than on an raft between Cuba and Florida...

From the webmaster

Protesting

From the night of November 6 to the night of November 21, 2003, all my six main websites could not be reached via their home pages, but only showed the following statement. I may eventually comment on this in more detail at a later date.

~ E ~ All my Web sites have been discontinued ~ out of protest against the meanness and stupidity of the majority of humans who support the incorrect laws we are suffering from. These humans, maybe you, are not worth my efforts.

A true friend advised me yesterday not to discontinue my Web sites. This is under consideration.

9 NOV 2003

For the time being, you still can access all pages, provided you know the URL (through your bookmarks for instance).

From the Webmaster

~ E ~ E-MAIL PROBLEMS. I only get to it today to announce that the e-mail problems mentioned in the previous entry have since long been solved, not many days after they had occurred. My mail arrangements work, but will steadily be improved. In case of any further problem, simply go to webmail on my contact page. Otherwise just use the address(es) that have been given to you on an individual basis. Thanks!

From the Webmaster

~ E ~ E-MAIL PROBLEMS. Last week I moved six of my main domains from one registrar to another. This requires very many changes in the registry, in the DNS servers and in the configurations of the ISPs involved and takes days to propagate on the Internet. Unfortunately, the new registrar encountered router problems just at that moment. The ensuing problems could not be solved before the weekend and especially not during the week-end, when Bavarians go to church or to the beach (they do not have the sea, but lakes and rivers) and let the Internet be what it wants to be. I only got some help from the States, from my webhost NTT/Verio, whose excellent support is available round the clock. They did the work the Germans were paid for, but could not do all, since the Germans could not be reached, having had to switch off their cell phones in church. :-) Result: my mail settings are not yet as they should be and, I hear, a lot of important messages to me BOUNCED! Please, till further notice, unless you have received, on an individual basis, a different address, use the following or go to webmail on my contact page: christian@butterbach.de

A trespass!

Since John is busy helping his son Thomas to build a larger garage and thus getting some urgently needed physical exercise and some vacation from his excessively intellectual endeavours and his Windows XP® and other computer problems, I hope that he will forgive me for sneaking into his PC cockpit and making this "unlawful entry" into bis weblog realm. As a trespasser, I have to take the risk of running, among those many libertarians around this website, into one of those gun toting ones with a loose trigger who is placing the property of material goods over the property of life, if it's not their own life... But I want to bring a lighter note into this blog than those academics who mostly visit this site would normally expect here. What's up?

Well, something very, very funny, and intelligent and talented. A little masterpiece of a short story (in Italian!) by Anna Lauwaert, uploaded today on my Luxemburgish site! Don't miss it and spread the word!

Laughing being healthy, it has to be considered a medicine. Another medicine, with this italianità as ingredient, is the art of Italian born New Zealand sculptor Oronzo Renna, whose latest works have been added today to his online exhibition in the Fine Arts section of my portal site. Please visit!
